Any of you remember back in the day when you walked through airports and there were the Hare Krishnas wearing flowing robes and passing our “free” flowers? Daisies to be exact.
It was simply meant to be a “gift of love” and they’d say have a nice day or something.
But it wasn’t just the “free” flower it actually one of the strongest sales and marketing techniques EVER because it plays on the basic human driver called reciprocity.
Basically what that means is when you give something (an item or a favor), the other person naturally feels indebted to you – especially if the gift is unexpected.
It was also used in the movie “The Godfather”.
But look the point is that it’s alive and well.
I work from coffee shops. It’s easy. I get hydration…caffeine…wi-fi…and now I also get subtle harassment.
Because the last few weeks there’s been a select group…a not for profit…set up with a table and brochures and pamphlets and FREE rubber wristbands and you MUST walk right by them if you want hydration…caffeine and free wifi.
“Sir I know you are SUPER busy but I’d like you to have this free wristband as a show of support for our —blah-ditty-blah—”
I say sure and take the wristband.
“Thank you so much sir your support means a lot and while you are inside please read this and if your heart is in the right place a small donation of only $XX will help 4 more children.”
“Ah shit”…I think to myself…”modern day millennial Hare Krishnas”
But look dear reader I do have a heart and I did feel like I ‘needed’ to reciprocate so as I left I gave them $10.
Then I went to another Starbucks…same show.
The next day, different S-Bux…diff part of town…yep…dog and pony.
I stopped making eye contact…
I felt a little uneasy…
I now do a coffee drive by and if I see the MHK’s (millennial Hare Krishnas) I don’t park.
The lesson here folks?
HOW are you marketing?
The free stuff is cool and reciprocity is indeed real but day after day…ask after ask…message after message then here’s what happens.
One goes from a legitimate caring human to a pain in the ass looking for another $10.
You get to choose.
